Professional Photoshoot Tips

There is no secret that a successful photoshoot requires good planning, communication and coordination between photographer and model. In order to help you book a successful photoshoot, we have put together some tips that will help you achieve the look you desire.

Prepare for your photoshoot

The first thing you need to do before your photoshoot is to prepare yourself mentally and physically. Make sure you know what look or style you are going for and bring along any props or clothes that might help with achieving that look. It is also important to come well-rested and hydrated to your shoot.

Arrive on time

It is important to arrive on time to your photoshoot or at least 10 minutes earlier than your scheduled time. If you will be driving, make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to get to the shoot and plan for potential delays such as bad weather, road closures etc.

Dress comfortably

Your comfort is one of the most important factors when it comes to a successful photoshoot so dress in something that makes you feel like yourself and comfortable. This can often be achieved through simple details such as wearing clothes and shoes that fit well and don’t restrict movement (i.e. high heels or tight clothing). Try out different poses beforehand to see what works for you and what doesn’t. Make sure that whatever you wear, it will still look good in photos even after they’ve been retouched.

Remember to smile!

This is a big one and most photographers would agree that a natural happy expression in your photos will make all the difference. If you are camera shy, it might be helpful to practise some poses out loud before the actual shoot so you can feel more comfortable when the time comes. You can also ask your photographer or MUA for tips on how to relax your facial muscles if you tend to have an ‘unhappy’ look. Keeping your mouth closed always helps because opening it can often spoil the photo (try giving yourself “fish lips”).

Communication is key

Once you know what style or look you are going for, let your photographer know as soon as possible. This will help them better plan the shoot and make sure they have all the necessary props and equipment. Good communication is key to having a successful photoshoot so make sure to ask your photographer any questions you might have about the shoot beforehand.

Be aware of your surroundings

It’s important to be aware of your surroundings when doing a photoshoot, especially if you are shooting outdoors. Make sure there is nothing in the background that might distract from the photo such as power lines, trash cans, people etc. If you are shooting in a public place, always ask for permission to take photos first.

Take care of your skin and hair

If you’re intending on doing a lot of close-ups, it’s important to take care of your skin and hair before the shoot. Make sure you exfoliate and moisturize your skin regularly in the days leading up to the shoot and use a light hair serum to help tame any frizz.

Be patient

Remember that not every photo will be perfect so don’t get discouraged if you don’t like some of the shots from your photoshoot. It often takes a lot of photos to get just a few good ones so be patient and let your photographer do their job. In most cases, the best photos are usually the ones that are taken least expected!

Have fun!

The most important thing is to have fun during your photoshoot. This will help you relax and achieve natural-looking photos. Enjoy the experience and let your photographer help guide you through it.

By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your photoshoot is a success!
