No matter what type of abstract photography you are trying, these are few critical rules for you to keep in mind.

Rule Of Thirds:

In any form of photography you will find the rule of thirds as the most common one that’s followed. The process is simple. Divide the frame into thirds both vertically and horizontally. You need to place the objects of interest where the vertical and horizontal dividing lines intersect.

Golden Triangle

The golden triangle approach is an alternate option. In this method draw an imaginary diagonal from one corner of the frame to the one opposing it. Now draw perpendicular lines from the other two corners on the diagonal. The object of interest must lie near one of the intersections.

No Rules

Even though the aforementioned processes provide some rules about the composition, you can choose to follow no rules at all. You can simply follow your intuition and see what sparks your imagination. Use this method only if you have the patience to keep trying till you find that perfect sweet frame.

Art Of Subtraction

If you have noticed closely then you will find that the response to abstract photography is a lot more on instincts and emotions. So, while creating the frame remove anything and everything that does not strengthen and suit the emotion reaction. That’s called the art of subtraction.

The process is not as difficult as it sounds. There are three steps to it. First, identify the emotion. Second, find all the things that will strengthen the emotion and add to the frame. Thirdly, and finally, subtract all that do not contribute to the emotion.

If you are thinking why this is so important, it’s because your image needs to convey a message and emotional strength is imperative for you to remove everything that is redundant. These extra items will just dilute the image and make it weaker.

Getting Composition Right

Strong compositions lead to strong abstract images. Of course, there is a lot more to learn about abstract photography.
